The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Nigeria has successfully obtained convictions against four individuals involved in internet fraud.
Emmanuel Ogbu, also known as Ewelina Ruminska, Cornelius Oyathekhua (aka Collins Fredrick), Daniel Emmanuel (aka Bob Matson), and Timmy Ebenezer were brought before Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court.
They were charged separately on one count related to internet fraud.
Cornelius Oyathekhua impersonated an American military personnel named Collins Fredrick on Facebook.
Through this false identity, he deceived and cheated Amander Lawler, claiming to be in a romantic relationship.
Oyathekhua has been found guilty of committing an offense under Section 308 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017, and is punishable under Section 309.
Daniel Emmanuel falsely presented himself as Bob Matson, a citizen of the United States, on Instagram.
By assuming this identity, he defrauded unsuspecting victims of $200. As a result, Emmanuel has been found guilty of an offense contrary to Section 142 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law 2017.
After pleading guilty to the charges against them, the defendants were sentenced by Justice Khobo.
Each of them received a punishment of two years imprisonment or a fine of N 150,000.
In addition, they are required to forfeit all proceeds of their crimes and the devices that were recovered from them to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
This conviction and sentencing send a clear message that the EFCC is committed to tackling internet fraud and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
