Stop Planned Burial For #ENDSARS Victims, Amnesty International Tells Lagos Govt

Amnesty International has called on the Lagos State Government to stop the planned mass burial of 103 #EndSARS victims.

The call comes in response to a leaked memo addressed to the state Ministry of Health by the state's procurement agency, which the government confirmed, but clarified that the victims to be buried are not related to the controversial Lekki Tollgate shooting.

In a statement released on Monday, Amnesty's Director of Information, Isa Sanusi, demanded an independent investigation into the matter and emphasized the need for autopsies to be conducted on the victims' corpses. He also insisted on revealing the identities of those to be buried.

"The Nigerian authorities must immediately halt their plans for a secret mass burial of #EndSARS victims and instead conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the killings, ensuring that those suspected of responsibility face fair trials," the statement read.

"Transparent coroner inquests and autopsies must be carried out on the 103 #EndSARS victims, with their identities and the circumstances of their deaths made public."

Amnesty International expressed dismay that the Lagos state government has kept the bodies of 103 #EndSARS victims in its custody since October 2020 without acknowledging the matter.

Sanusi further called for the immediate release of all individuals detained due to their involvement in the #EndSARS protests.

Additionally, he urged the Nigerian authorities to ensure that victims and their families receive access to justice and appropriate remedies, including adequate compensation.
