A fire broke out at berths 7 and 8 of the port cargo terminal at Tin Can Island port in Lagos, causing a crane to catch fire and affecting the vessel MV. ALGECIRAS EXPRESS loaded with containers on Thursday, July 20th.
Eyewitness reports said the fire broke out in a crane while unloading a container from the ship and spread to the ship and other containers.
The fire, which involved the Liebherr Crane and the ship Happag Lloyd, was found to be caused by mechanical failure and reportedly lasted for about four hours before being brought under control by the fire brigade.
NPA officials have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but sources said the eruption did not result in any loss of life.
