Border Closure: After months, federal government yet to decide on reopening

Border Closure

By  Eric Patrick,

It is barely four to five months after the Nigerian government announced the closure of the country’s land borders and the government is yet to fix a date for reopening.

According to President Muhammadu Buhari the partial closure of Nigeria’s border with the Benin Republic, was due to the massive smuggling activities, especially rice, taking place on that corridor.

The government shut the country's borders to curb smuggling and to strengthen the country's security.

Neighbouring countries have raised the alarm over the closure but the Nigerian Government has insisted that the border would remain closed until there was a commitment from neighbouring countries to curb smuggling.
