The return of traffic robberies on Lagos roads

The return of traffic robberies on Lagos roads

There has been a return of traffic robberies on Lagos roads with incidents in these areas;  Oshodi Bridge, Anthony, Oshodi-Isolo expressway, Toyota Bus Stop, Airport road, Constain/National Theatre, Third mainland bridge, Gbagada-Oworonshoki- Ketu expressway, Ojota, Berger long bridge and Agege motor road.

The fear of a traffic robber is the beginning of wisdom as motorists never toy with the opportunity to wind up completely when stuck in traffic.

It was gathered that these typically occur between 5:30 am, 6:30 am, and 7:30 pm to 10: 00 respectively while some were recorded in broad daylight.

The culprits seem invisible until they appear right before you,  snatch your mobile phone, wristwatch, costly jewelry, laptop or a bag.

Lagos state with over 17.5m population and 2000 citizens tripping in and out of the city every second has become a dern for criminals who some of them turn to be traffic robbers robbing their victims with toy guns in traffic.

In areas of heavy traffic, stories have been told of day and night robbers unleashing terror and mayhem on helpless road commuters and motorists.

Motorists in Lagos State have revealed that the caused of traffic in the state is due to bad roads and have called on  Babajide Sanwo-Olu the state governor to create a lasting solution, as the robbery cases increase day by day.

A victim who pleaded anonymous told our correspondent that, he was driving along Oshodi mile-two road without winding up and was on the phone when a traffic robber approached him between the age range of 18-20 years and asked him to end the call and hand over the phone to him.

With a gun pointed at me, i thought that would be the end of me, with fear I gave him the phone and he went ahead asking me to give him my wallet I did all he asked me to he said.

Another victim who identifies herself as Joy Uche revealed that her friend was stabbed to death while struggling with the culprits and her phone, the handbag was collected.

Motorists are advised to do the following;

  • Keep valuables away from sight while driving

  • The use of mobile devices including cell phones, iPads, laptops, should be minimized while in traffic especially in flashpoints areas.

  • Valuables like Laptops, handbags, should be kept in the booth while stuck in Lagos traffic.

  • Keep windows up and car doors locked at all times while commuting.

  • Do not pick up strangers looking to hitch a ride with you.

  • Avoid patronizing street hawkers while in traffic.

  • It is believed that driving in the middle of the lane is much safer than staying on either edge of the road.

  • Make effective use of your view mirrors to monitor activities of street hawkers around your vehicle.
