Teen dies, three hospitalised in 12 hours of violence across London

A teenager has died and three men are in hospital after two stabbings in the space of 12 hours in London. The capital’s knife epidemic has reached unprecedented levels with more than 30 deaths since the start of 2019.



 In the first incident, police were called about 9.10pm on Thursday night to reports of a stabbing in Brighton Road, Croydon. Paramedics and the air ambulance also arrived and attempted to treat a teen suffering from stab wounds. He died at the scene 40 minutes later, the Met Police said.



Another man, also believed to be in his late teens, was found nearby with stab wounds and taken to a south London hospital where he is in a stable condition. The suspect, another teenager, was found close to Purley Railway Station with a slash wound.



He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and taken to a south London hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two other men, whose ages are not known, have been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.









They remain in custody at south London police stations. Numerous crime scenes have been set up around Brighton Road, where section 60, giving police special search powers, is also in place. Croydon South Tory MP Chris Philp tweeted: ‘The whole community is shocked by the fatal stabbing in Purley last night.’



On Friday at 7.40am police were called to reports of an unrelated stabbing in Barking Road, Canning Town. They found a man in his 20s suffering from knife wounds.



His condition is not yet known and no arrests have been made. By the end of 2018, the number of homicides in London reached 135, the highest in almost a decade. As of July 4, there were at least 33 fatalities from stabbings in London this year. The unofficial total number of people murdered is over 70.
