No reasonable northerner will oppose restructuring – Bafarawa

No reasonable northerner will oppose restructuring – Bafarawa

A Peoples Democratic Party presidential
aspirant, Attahiru Bafarawa, has said that the only way to develop and
move the nation forward is through the restructuring of the polity.

Speaking during a meeting with Southern
and Middle Belt Leaders Forum in Abuja on Sunday, the former Sokoto
State governor stated that no rational northerner would oppose the
restructuring of the country.

Bafarawa noted that the nation would
have passed the stage it was if the political leaders had listened to
the counsels of the SMBLF members at the parley, who included Pan-Niger
Delta Forum leader, Chief Edwin Clark; Afenifere chieftain, Chief Ayo
Adebanjo; President-General of Ohanaeze, Chief John Nwodo;  Middle Belt
Forum President, Dr Bitrus Pogu, and a host of others.

He said, “What made me join this
(presidential) race is the experience I have as a politician. From the
way and manner you (SMBLF members) are carrying on, I don’t think you
are doing this for yourselves.

“I believe what the nation needs is
restructuring and I don’t think any reasonable northerner who knows what
he is doing would oppose restructuring because that is the only way to
move this country forward. If we had listened to the calibre of people
here, we wouldn’t be where we are now.”

The aspirant pledged to ensure the
decentralisation of power if elected as President in 2019, adding that
he had been campaigning across the country and observing the bad state
of the roads.

While presenting his blueprint for the
development of the country, Bafarawa described himself as a democrat and
a businessman, adding that the business he started with N10,000 some
years ago had grown into a multibillion-naira investment.

The SMBLF also hosted a presidential
aspirant under Kowa Party, Mr Sina Fagbenro, who blamed the nation’s
retrogression on its inability to manage its diversity and population.

The World Bank consultant said the political structure did not enable efficiency and expression of the people.

Fagbenro stated that the Muhammadu
Buhari administration lacked what he called a sense of urgency, adding
that it was also uncoordinated.

“A government that cannot unite itself
is incapable of unifying the nation; I believe restructuring is
fundamental to our development as a country and I believe we need to go
back to the pre-1963 constitution,” he submitted, drawing applause from
the forum members.

The aspirant admonished the SMBLF to make the restructuring of the country the major issue in the 2019 elections.

Speaking earlier while welcoming the
aspirants separately, Nwodo inquired about their stand on restructuring
and how they planned to carry it out if elected as president in 2019.
